What is 'Telegenic?'

Telegenic: "having an appearance or manner that is appealing on television." - Merriam Webster

What does being 'Telegenic' mean?

In my humble opinion, "telegenic" is a combination of little things, that turn you into being likable, watchable, relatable, reliable and trustworthy while on-camera.

All of those things, add up to on-camera confidence.

So... What are those things?

Keep in mind these are things that I've learned in my 15 years of experience in TV. It's a lot of trial and error, however, the things I'm about to tell you helped me connect with viewers on a friendship-type level.

1. Eye-Contact: Making eye contact with the camera, and interviewees, helps make a connection with the audience/viewers. However, a word of caution, DON'T stare into the camera or at your interviewee. It's important to make the eye-contact as natural as possible.

2. Smiling: This seems like an obvious choice, but it's not. I say this only because sometimes we get in our heads or get so caught up with what we need to say, that we forget to smile. Don't forget. It's amazing how just a brief smile can make you more relatable and likable.

3. Body Language: Take a good look at the phot above. Look at how I'm standing, how my head is, and where I'm holding my hands. These subtle things, while they seem easy and even small, can make a difference on how confident you look while on-camera.

Bonus tip: Though, possibly the most important.

Your Voice.

Using your voice to tell your story, is so incredibly important. The inflection, which is HOW you say something is often times more important than what you're actually saying.

This takes time. Experience. And LOTS of trial and error. It's important to be engaging, without being overly energetic, but also without being a robot.
